Pork Siu Mai (Siomai)

Pork siu mai (siomai) is incredibly delicious, always a crowd pleaser. This dim sum recipe is so easy to make, you only need a few ingredients which are available at your local supermarket.

Other variation for siu mai (siomai) filling like chopped peeled prawns / shrimp, minced beef, minced chicken. For vegetarian dim sum instead of meat, substitute with mashed soft tofu with chopped mushroom.

With the vegetable chestnut can be substitute with chopped cabbage, grated jicama (singkamas), carrots, chopped spring onion.

When I make siu mai, I always add a dash of sesame oil for flavouring, chestnut for crunch, grated ginger for taste, garlic and onion. For easiest way, put all these in a food processor and minced into small pieces. I will exclude the the ginger because I like my ginger grated. But still entire up to you how you want to prepare the ingredients.

How to make siu mai (siomai)

Ingredients

  • 500 gram pork minced
  • 1 cup spring onion chopped
  • 1 can of chestnut chopped
  • 3-4 gloves of garlic minced
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon powder chicken stock
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour / cornstarch
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients using a wooden spoon mix well until well combined.
  • Lay your wonton wrapper, scoop 1 tablespoon of filling in the middle of wrapper and wet the sides with water.
  • Gather the edges and lightly press sides against the filling to adhere. Gently pleat the the wrapper either close the top or let it open to show the filling on top. Make around 40 pieces.
  • Line steamer with cabbage leaves or parchment paper.
  • Steam for 20-25 minutes.
  • Serve with dipping sauce.

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger grated
  • 1 tablespoon lemon or vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 piece chili chopped
