How to Grow Bean Sprouts in a Bowl with Colander

How to grow bean sprouts out of mung beans is very easy and simple to make. This is an economical way rather than buying it to your supermarket since mung beans are inexpensive to buy. All you need is patients and you will harvest in 3 to 5 days. This is a very fresh and crunchy bean sprouts to add to your dish for cooking or for garnishing.

Sprouting Method

There are many ways to prepare your bean sprouts you can make this just using gadget that you already have or invest to a proper seed sprouter.

  • Bowl with colander - you can purchase this in Kmart for A$1.50 this is the method I used if I only need small amount of bean sprouts. Or use larger coriander just find mixing bowl that fits.
  • Jar - this is the inexpensive way if you just using a large recycled jar, cover with muslin cloth and tie with rubber band.
  • Seed sprouter - if you wish to spend A$20 you can purchase this in Bunnings.

How to cook beans sprout?

Beans sprouts is very useful, can be added to a lot of Asian cuisine specially on your soup dish like laksa; Vietnamese pho soup for example, used in stir fries this can be added last to keep the crunch, fresh spring rolls, fried spring rolls, salads and also for garnishing. This very refreshing because of the crunch and freshness of beans sprout.

Easy steps how to grow beans sprouts in a bowl with colander

  • In a small bowl with colander, put 1/2 cup mung beans and rinse well.
  • Add a little bit of water just enough to touch the mung beans on the bottom around 3-4 tablespoon.
  • Cover with tea towel and find a spot that is dark. I put mind next to the sink so I will remember to change water everyday three times a day for best sprouting.
  • When rinsing the bean sprouts remove the skin from the mung beans
  • Bean sprout ready to eat 3 to 5 days.

How to store and keep beans sprouts fresh?

To store and keep bean sprout fresh your beans sprout, put in a zip lock, plastic bag or sealed container and keep in refrigerator . Make sure that beans sprout are dry before storing. Beans sprout will last in refrigerator for two weeks.
